Inception

Inception is a 2010 American science fiction-action film written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, and Cillian Murphy. The film, a variant on the heist genre, centers on Dom Cobb, an " extractor ", who enters the dreams of others to obtain information that is otherwise inaccessible. His abilities have cost him his family and his nationality, but a chance at redemption and regaining his old life is promised when Cobb and his team of specialists are hired to plant an idea in a target's subconscious. This process of planting of an idea, known as " inception ", is less familiar and far more difficult than Cobb's usual job of " extraction ".

Dominic " Dom " Cobb ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) leads a group of " extractors ": professional thieves steal who steal secrets from within shared dreams, a method developed by the military based on sedation and connection to a central electronic hub. Team members have specific roles: ' architects ' create the layout and buildings of the dream, ' forgers ' can assume the identity of others in dreams, and ' subjects ' are the victims of the crime who populate the dream with their subconscious projections such as passers-by, or vaults representing information which they wish to keep secret. The opposite of extraction is inception, the process by which an idea is planted in the mind of the subject, so that it organically grows and feels like an original thought.

Pain is felt during dreams, but death results in a return to consciousness. Dreams within dreams can be built but each layer is less stable and dilates time progressively longer. Carrying a ' totem ', a small object whose physical properties only oneself knows intimately ( e.g. a loaded die ), can be used to test whether one is in a dream created by somebody else.



Inception was first developed by Christopher Nolan, based on the notion of " exploring the idea of people sharing a dream space — entering a dream space and sharing a dream. "
